The Cuckoo’s Calling is a 2013 crime fiction novel by J. K. Rowling, published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
I was so excited to read this book as I am a huge Harry Potter and by default, J.K Rowling fan. I couldn’t wait to see what she would do with a more adult genre. Especially crime fiction because it is my number one genre EVER! To be very honest my favourite aspect of the book was definitely the characters rather than the plot itself.
Cormoran Strike is a Cornish ex-military war veteran who fought in the Middle East and is back in London trying to make a living in the working world by starting up his own private investigation agency with little or no money. He lost a leg during the war but it was evident throughout the book that his injuries weren’t just physical but mental as well. His character is well developed, he is clever, sharp, stubborn and determined to find out what happened to Lula Landry, a famous model who apparently died by suicide by Strike isn’t convinced.
Strike’s working life changes for the better the day Robin Ellacott walks into his office as his new temporary secretary. Robin is an unemployed determined lady who is fighting demons of her own. Together they make a perfect team….. at least most of the time. I could mention more about the plot but for me, this book is all about the characters, their relationship and their journey.
I have the paperback version of the book but I recently purchased the audiobook which is narrated by Robert Glenister. He truly makes the book come alive! I would highly recommend this book to other fans of crime fiction and thrillers. I would give this book 4 stars for plot and 5 stars for characters so 4.5 stars overall!
